The other night I was talked in to seeing the film Green Zone. As I study the great epic the Bhagavad Gita intensively with James Boag at the moment, I thought it could be interesting to see another ‘war story’.
This is not a film review. Let’s just say that one of the two stores is epic, and the other one is not. -But there were similarities.
Not entirely unlike the righteous warrior Arjuna in India, Matt Damon was fighting a battle in Afghanistan where it was not clear what who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. Like Arjuna, Matt was sometimes lost and confused -too bad he didn’t have a guide as competent as Arjuna’s. Especially since Mat, too, had to make tough decisions and chose a challenging road and of the kind less travelled.
As James so beautifully explains in his teachings, the Bhagavad Gita is really a story of our own internal battle between good and bad tendencies. In other words, we are all warriors, we are all little ‘Arjunas’.
Maybe Green Zone also has something spiritual to teach us? Maybe we are all little warriors like Matt Damon in need of a Green Zone? -In need of a shelter where we can find respite from the turbulent world around us, where we can hear the voice of truth spoken.
For me, my Green Zone is that unchanging, blissful place within, where deep meditation can take me.
Where’s your Green Zone?
